The meritocracy which Blair claimed was his aim was nothing of the sort. Blair's path to advancement was solely for the privileged and middle class.
What Blair really wanted was a craven, informer society where people denounced friends and family to the police and medics.

Ideology. As Pope Benedict tried to articulate but failed,romantic idealism which talks about Progress in a tyranny such as Britain is a confection of competing opposites. Ideology of the Blair type mixes Kant and Hegel to produce lying narratives and false imperatives based on bombast and wearing your opponent down psychologically before you physically attack him. Blair's elitist ideology rests on the precepts of eighteenth century idealism. Labour ignores the reality of class and the centrality of utility at its peril. Others are much better at manufacturing illusion and will come out on top until this romantic idealism fades from public life and the popular imagination.
